Flighty football fans should stick around

Editor:

In Monday's edition of the Wildcat, Seth Kaufman wrote about how bad the fans are here in Tucson and I couldn't agree more. Seth, Nick Clemente and myself were all sitting together at Thursday night's football game against Georgia Tech when the fair weather fans of Tucson began to file out of the stadium. Little did they know that they would miss one of the best football games ever. Really, that was the best football game I have ever seen and I'm sure Seth and Nick would be the first to agree. It was really pathetic to hear an encore of boos and obscenities toward Dan White when he threw the interception to the Georgia Tech defensive back. I saw the replay many times and it was a great play by the defender. Then when White tried to make the tackle and was unsuccessful, the crowd around our group erupted in a frenzy of curses and Wildcat bashing. I was thinking, "leave the guy alone;" he knows he made a mistake and he doesn't need 48,000 (or whatever was left) 'fans' to tell him how to play quarterback. After that play the fairweathers began to file out of the stadium. I remember thinking how great it would be to have the 'Cats come back and win the game just to spite the fair weather fans. And as it always is fate works in mysterious ways. Here's a little recap for all the idiots who left early: a TD pass to Richard Dice, a blocked punt, a quarterback keeper for a TD, a huge defensive stand, and what's that? The 'Cats are 2 and 0? Unbelievable! Believe it fairweathers Ÿ four big, no, enormous, plays sent the 'Cats to victory.

So, fair weather fans, have you learned your lesson? Are you going to give up and leave early because we are down on the scoreboard? Just because the team is down on the scoreboard doesn't mean they are down in their hearts. A piece of advice to those who left early: Next time, stick around, you just might see a comeback.
