At the University of Arizona, it sometimes seems as though a true feeling of community can be impossible to accomplish.
The fact that there are more than 35,000 students and 12,000 faculty members on the campus often perpetuates this ideology.
Yet for the past 13 years, some faculty members quietly have aimed to dispel this way of thinking through something as simple as a softball league.
The league started in 1982, and has been active every year except 1991, said John Warren, a UA materials handling supervisor who has overseen the league since 1988 and has played since the league's inception.
"My phones start ringing around February with people asking when we're going to start," Warren said. "Everyone looks forward to it."
Teams are organized through different departments at the university, including Residence Life, Stores, Campus Facilities Management, Hospital Facilities Management, Extended University, Vending and Grounds and Labor.
