I would like to comment on an article printed April 12th on the possibility of Delta Chi fraternity's reinstatement ("Interfraternity Council rebuffs Delta Chi," April 12). I am not a member of the Greek community, but I am a member of the University of Arizona community and something stinks. Now, I do not have all the facts, I can only go by what I have read (in the Wildcat) and questions I have asked. From the best of my recollection, Delta Chi was stripped of its charter due to the consumption of alcohol by underage students during fraternity functions and the charge of rape against a member or someone associated with the fraternity at the chapter house.
What stinks is this: I have been at this university for two years and I have noticed the different sororities and fraternities, but I haven't seen anything or anyone associated with Omega Psi Phi fraternity. I asked someone what happened to them and they told me that they have been banned from campus for five years because of hazing. So let's see Ä a five-year ban for hurting a pledge, but take away a woman's honor, violate her body, contribute to the illegal use of alcohol, not to mention possibly cause arrest for DUI, or worse, traffic fatality, and after a few months, you get reinstated. Something stinks to high heaven.
Now I could say that Omega Psi Phi received such harsh treatment because it is a black fraternity and Delta Chi is getting a cakewalk because daddy is an alumni with a lot of financial power, but that wouldn't be fair. Would it? Like I mentioned before I do not know all the facts, but I know thisÄ the members of Delta Chi should be MEN and not spoiled brats. Be responsible for the actions that took place at your house. A woman was raped. Alcohol was served to minors. Do not allow your charter to be reinstated until the outcome of these allegations are known and the results are in your favor. You will be better people if you know you did the right thing.
