The Arizona men's track and field team completed a successful campaign at the Drake Relays last weekend. The highlight was its winning performance in the distance medley. Bob Keino, Cullen Plousha, Luther Kopf and Martin Keino finished in 9:40.65.
"This weekend's Drake Relays was an excellent meet for us, one of our best this season," said UA coach Dave Murray. "Our men's distance medley team did a great job. The funny thing was that going into the final leg, we didn't look that great. Our handoff from Bob to Cullen was a disaster and cost us two or three seconds. But Martin came in and picked us up moving us from fifth to first with a lap time of 3:58.6."
The hurdles were also good for the Wildcats. Leo Simmons won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.30 seconds, and the women's shuttle hurdle finished second place to Georgia, 57.08 to 57.22. Other impressive performances were given by Viola Schaffer, who finished second in the 5,000 with a time of 16:31.04, and Margarito Casillas, who won the 10,000 in 30:06.46.
"We had a great meet, but next weekend will be just as important," Murray said. "It is called the Last Chance Meet and for many of our athletes it is exactly that, their last chance to qualify for the Pac-10 Championships."
