On the strength of four individual first-place showings, the UA men's track and field squad won its third consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championship Saturday in Reno, Nev.

The Wildcats tallied 104 points to edge Oregon (93) and Washington (72). Arizona's women's squad finished third with 78 points behind Washington (95) and Stanford (81).

"The kids did a great job and showed that they are going to be an exciting team to watch this year," UA head coach Dave Murray said.

Sophomore Bob Keino won the 3,000-meter race with an NCAA indoor provisional qualifying time of 8 minutes, 13.95 seconds. Keino also finished second in the mile at 4:11.01, which was also a provisional-qualifying mark. Junior Luther Kopf won his third straight 800-meter race at this meet with a time of 1:53.31.

The UA men continued to be strong in the field events as junior Chima Ugwu won the shotput and freshman Jussi Autio captured the pole vault. Autio's vault of 17-1 set a new indoor school record.

In the 35-pound weight throw, senior Aaron Corcorran and freshman Tapio Kolunsarka tied for second place with identical tosses of 63-93/4 for the Wildcats. Both men provisionally qualified with their efforts.

On the women's side, Arizona was led by freshman Amy Skieresz who won the 3,000 meters and automatically qualified for the NCAA indoors with her time of 9:28.67. That time was also a new meet record. Senior Michelle Johnson remained undefeated in the 55-meter hurdles on the season with a time of 7.74.

Junior Viola Schaffer and freshman Emily Nay finished second and third, respectively, in the 5,000 meters for the Wildcats. Schaffer and Nay both provisionally qualified for the NCAAs with times of 16:57 and 17:19.2, respectively.
