'Truth' would help settle racial tensions

Editor:

In response to the Don Frerichs' (Interfraternity Council president) letter to the editor, ("Remarks block road to resolve," March 21). I must say that the letter was totally denigrating, dastardly and overwhelmingly false. The attacks on myself, MEChA and Salomon Baldenegro (assistant dean for Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs) were slanderous and an attempt to demonize us based on erroneous statements. Dean Baldenegro and I have never been quoted in the Wildcat as saying "all Greeks are racist." If this were true, I am sure we would lose our Greek MEChA members.

While referring to Kappa Sigma, Frerichs also states "as president of the Interfraternity Council, I was pleased to see one of the chapters I represent working to correct their actions in as positive a mannerism as possible." Have you forgotten that Kappa Sigma denied using racial slurs for over five months? Is this what one would call "as positive a mannerism as possible?" I personally do not think so.

It is unfortunate that Don Frerichs, the IFC president, would write such a letter. If Frerichs is truly willing to help resolve the issue, I suggest he tell the truth, rather than to demonize.

Tomas Martinez
MEChA president
