A UA junior was just named one of 75 students in the nation to receive the $30,000 Truman graduate scholarship.

Wende Nichols-Julien, double major in regional development and political science, will receive $3,000 to finish out her senior year and $9,000 per year for up to three years at any graduate school of her choice.

Nichols-Julien, who has a 3.96 grade point average, plans to attend graduate school in Auston, Texas for her masters degree in planning with a focus on residential planning.

"I want to stay in the Southwest because I'm interested in working with issues related to the U.S. Mexico boarder," she said.

The application process includes an interview and submission of a paper about public service, which she wrote on the Colonias slum housing in Texas.

The scholarship requires the recipient to seek employment in public service.

Nichols-Julien also has a Flinn scholarship, a full-ride undergraduate scholarship, to attend the UA.

Body fat testing offered on Mall

Body fat testing is being offered today on the UA Mall between 11 a.m. and noon as part of the Student Recreation Center's promotion for fitness week.

The purpose of fitness week is to help provide people with information about health and fitness activities offered through the Campus Recreation Center, said Sue Brenner-Hughes assistant director of fitness at the Student Recreation Center.

Those who participate in the body fat testing activity will have basic questions answered about healthy body fat counts and weight management.

Step aerobics, basketball and nutritional food and drink sampling are among the events to educate the campus community about health and fitness.
