Hope for a much-needed Arizona win arrives at Sancet Field tonight in the form of the Grand Canyon Antelopes.

This game is the second of three non-conference games sprinkled throughout the second half of the Arizona schedule which is otherwise dominated by Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division play.

The game is at 7 p.m. at Sancet Field.

Last time they played the Antelopes (15-19), the Wildcats (20-22 overall, 4-14 in the Six-Pac) were coming off a winning series with UCLA. The Wildcats went on to win 6-4 at Brazelle Stadium in Phoenix. This time, the Wildcats have lost six straight games and are in desperate need of a win.

"We need a victory," Arizona head coach Jerry Kindall said. "A victory will turn it around. We play Grand Canyon (today), and I'm hoping (this) will be the game that will turn us around."

The Wildcats are coming off a rough series with No. 5 USC in which they lost by a combined score of 23-6. Arizona's play in the series was solid except for their anemic offense. The Wildcats had only 15 hits in the whole series, compared to the Trojans, who had 15 hits in Saturday's game alone. Only first baseman Brian Becker and second baseman John Powers had more than one hit in any game of the series.

"The team did a great job," starting pitcher Darrell Hussman said. "The defense didn't slip up. We just didn't have hitting. But it'll come along."

The Wildcats first played the Antelopes in 1967, and they lead the overall series 46-18. In 1995, Arizona won two of three games by a combined score of 37-21.

"They're a good team," Hussman said about Grand Canyon. "We just have to come out and fight hard and never give up."

The starting pitcher for the Wildcats has yet to be announced, although it will probably be freshman left-hander Rob Shabansky or senior right-hander Matt Hendren.
