Olivia Hanson said what she remembered most about being a resident of Manzanita-Mohave in 1973 was the time a streaker ran through the lounge.

She was in the phone booth in the corner of the lounge talking to her mother when everyone started screaming.

"I looked up and I was shocked," she said. "A naked man ran by."

She said those were fun times in her life and that people just do not do crazy things like that anymore.

Hanson returned to Manzanita-Mohave Saturday to celebrate the 40th birthday of the hall.

The hall has undergone many changes in the 23 years since she lived there. She said the rooms now look much different from how they used to.

"We used to have metal bedframes and desks," she said. "Of course there wasn't any carpet," she added.

Kirk Sibley, resident assistant, said that more than the furniture has changed at the hall. The code of conduct for the hall in 1961 prohibited lounging in the lounge and walking barefoot in the lobby.

The funniest rule in 1961 addressed serenading, he said. Residents were only allowed to respond to serenaders with applause and could not talk to them, he said.

Saturday's celebration began at 4 p.m. with music from the UA steel drum band and a barbecue.

About 100 people attended the day's festivities, enjoying chicken wings, cake and soda which was floating in a plastic swimming pool.

Other 40th birthday activities included a screening of the movie "Airplane" on Tuesday. A mock airplane was set up in the courtyard, and residents acting as flight attendants served beverages to those watching the movie.

On Wednesday it was Culture Cafe night in the lounge where residents and staff entertained each other with skits, music and song.

On Thursday, there was a "'Must-see TV' ice cream social" where residents watched the television shows "Friends" and "ER" and ate ice cream.

Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat, UA mascots, wandered through the crowd Saturday joking with residents and playing with the children of hall employees.

John Ramsey, mining and engineering freshman, was garbed in a traditional Scottish kilt to play the bagpipes at the celebration.

Sibley, coordinator of the birthday celebration, said, "It's really great to see everyone coming out. The day is really just a thank-you to all the residents who live here."

James Van Arsdel, director of residence life, said, "I hope that we continue to build places that are as popular as Manzi-Mo has been."

It costs $2,000 a year to live at Manzanita-Mohave now. The hall fee for 1956 was not available, but for comparison, the cost at Pima Hall in the 1950s was $22.50 a month.

The price will increase by $400 next year because of the cost of recent renovations.

The hall's celebration ended with three hours of karaoke in the lounge. About 50 people packed in to see residents and employees trying their hand at singing.

Kimber Short, of Kimber's Karaoke, said with a smile, "They're all having a great time, but hopefully none of them are majoring in music."

The hall's celebration, which cost $1,300, was sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, Associated Students and Manzanita-Mohave Hall government.
