Workers hit gas line at West Main Gate Center

The construction site at the new West Main Gate Center shopping area was evacuated Friday about noon after construction workers hit a gas line, causing a gas leak.

Tucson Fire Department Capt. Mike Walls said gas leaked from a 2-inch incision in a pipe.

The fire department's hazardous materials team monitored the leak for nearly an hour while Southwest Gas clamped the pipe, Walls said. He said the situation was of "no real danger" and "almost routine." There were no injuries, Walls said.

Had the gas ignited, that would have been a problem, he said. He said "fairly high winds" quickly dispersed the gas.

The construction site is located at the northeast corner of East University Boulevard and North Euclid Avenue.
