In a regular wilderness adventure, the Arizona volleyball team got chewed up by the Oregon State Beavers 3-1 and then shot down the Oregon Ducks 3-0 over the weekend in Oregon.The Wildcats, coming off last weekend's split with Stanford and California, lost to the No. 23-ranked Beavers 15-17, 15-7, 15-10, 15-2 on Friday night, but came back on Saturday night to sweep the Ducks in convincing fashion 17-15, 15-2, 15-3.
"Obviously we wanted to finish 2-0 and beat both teams," Arizona head coach Dave Rubio said. "We didn't execute at the right times, but I was pleased with our effort."
The first road win of the year was bittersweet for the Wildcats who ran their record to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference. After a close match with OSU (13-1, 4-1) in Corvallis, Arizona went on to beat the Ducks in Eugene. The Ducks were last in the Pacific 10 Conference with an 0-3 record, 6-7 overall. Outside hitter Barb Bell led Arizona in kills for the 32nd consecutive match, but still had a season low of 13.
Heidi Bomberger appeared in her 100th consecutive match and tied Bell with 10 digs, adding four kills and two blocks. Bomberger continued her strong service play with a team-leading three aces. Keisha Johnson had another solid game at middle blocker, recording seven kills and five block assists. Setter Michaela Ebben had 31 assists.
"I think that we're all disappointed after the loss to Oregon State," Rubio said. "There are two things in the Pac-10, winning and misery."
