Dole deserves our respect, but the issues say re-elect President Clinton

Editor:

I am writing in response to Mathew Johnson's letter ("The press focuses on Clinton because he has 'tabloid appeal," Oct. 7). I agree that Bob Dole is a man of high character and that he deserves our respect and our thanks for his years of service to our country.

I disagree with Mr. Johnson on his reasons for voting for a president however. I vote for a president based on the vision the candidate has for our future. Based on these issues, I see a big difference between President Clinton and former Sen. Dole.

Clinton wants to strengthen our commitment to education. Dole wants to abolish any federal oversight of education by eliminating the Department of Education. Clinton wants to protect our environment. Dole and his fellow party leaders in Congress have led a fight against such protection in the last Congress. Clinton is committed to fighting crime through gun regulation and putting more police on the street. Dole has voted against such proposals in the past.

Do I respect Bob Dole? Without question. Does that mean we should vote for him in November? No, because on the ISSUES that will shape our future, the President is the obvious choice.
