Elimination of sport club funding disappointing

Editor:

I am a former sport club president and am still an active member. I was very disappointed to hear about the elimination of sport club funding ("ASUA eliminates sport club funding," Nov. 14). While a 30 percent budget cut is a lot, I do not see why funding cannot be trimmed instead of axed. A minimal amount of funding is essential for the existence of many of these clubs.

Erin Russel, vice president for clubs and organizations, is quoted as saying "...we will not be transferring any more money to them [sport clubs] because of the liability." This sounds good, however as sport club members we are required to sign a form stating that we will not hold the school liable for any occurrences. This voids Russel's argument.

Additionally, without funding, many of the sport clubs cannot work effectively. Due to a lack of funding, sport clubs will no longer be able to represent the University of Arizona. I always thought of ASUA's funding as an investment. Sport clubs send athletes all over the world representing this school. It is sad that ASUA cannot appreciate this.
