Funds for cable not drawn from tuition

Editor:

This letter is written in response to the recent misconceptions that you, the Arizona Daily Wildcat, and a university employee have had concerning the Department of Residence Life's cable system.

The money being used to operate the system is not coming from the students' tuition dollars, it is in fact an auxiliary fund coming from a portion of the rent that residents pay to live in the residence halls (this system happens to be supported by a majority of the approximately 4,800 residents who live in the halls). For this reason alone, the money cannot be used for anything else but for our cable system.

Thus, taxpayer money is not being "wasted" to give residents "Nick-At-Nite" or "VH-1", which happen to be two channels that are not included in our system. It is interesting to point out though, that one of the major goals of the Department of Residence Life is to educate the residents in the halls through different avenues. This is why several channels such as, "C-SPAN", "The History Channel," and "The Discovery Channel," are being included in the system.

To sum up, this confusion and inaccuracy could have been avoided if some time was taken to actually find out the truth. If anyone has any questions concerning this feel free to contact Steve Gilmore at 621-6519, or myself at 621-4894.

Chris Christensen,
President
