THURSDAY, DEC. 8
Ballet Arizona officially ushers in the holiday season with its opening performance of "The Nutcracker" at 7 p.m. in the Tucson Convention Center Music Hall. This annual tradition features new choreography by Michael Uthoff and the Tucson Symphony will perform Tchaikovsky's immortal score. Performances will continue daily until Sunday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. For ticket information, call Ballet Arizona at (602) 381-1096.
The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress, will be presenting six different student films tonight at 7 and 9 p.m. These films are the product of students in the begining 16mm production class and span from romance to drama to fantasy. For more information, call the Screening Room at 622-2262.

The Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair celebrates its 25th anniversary this year when it begins at10 a.m. Ranked as one of the top 200 shows in America by America's Premier Show and Festival Publication, the street fair will feature hundreds of vendors with unique wares, just in time for the holidays. The UA School of Music will be performing Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro" in Centennial Hall at 8 p.m. There will be a second performance on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. The Opera, which is one of Mozart's most famous, will be performed in English accompanied by the UA School of Music Orchestra. Club Congress, 311 E Congress, will be holding a special Rock n' Roll Weenie Roast from 4-9 p.m. For only $2, you can get hot dogs, a beer and admission to see the varied bands playing that evening. For more information, call Club Congress at 622-8848 .
SUNDAY, DEC. 11
Get a taste of the West today at Charreda: Mexican Riding and Roping at the Pima County Fairgrounds West Arena, 11300 S. Houghton Rd. Administered by the Arizona Humanities Council, the event features free demonstrations of the unique Mexican riding and roping tradition, as well as music and food. The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra presents Beethoven's "Triple Concerto" at 3 p.m. at the Berger Performing Arts Center at the Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd. In addition to the Symphony Orchestra, the rarely performed concerto will feature violinist Anna Gendler, cellist Stefan Polgar, and pianist Alexander Tenster. Judy Collins will put the UA campus in a holiday mood this afternoon when she performs "Come Rejoice! A Judy Collins Christmas" in Centennial hall at 2 p.m. Grammy-Award winning Collins has recorded such songs as "Amazing Grace" and "Send in the Clowns" in her 30-year career. "Come Rejoice! A Judy Collins Christmas" marks the artist's 27th recorded album. Her performance tonight is part of Collins' 1994 Christmas Tour. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 14
The Dinnerware Gallery, 135 E. Congress, will host a "Mid-Day Music" Concert from 12:15-1 p.m featuring Mary Redhouse and Larry Hauer performing jazz, blues and Native American music. THURSDAY, DEC. 15
The Kaleidioscope Players perform the original musical drama "Terminus" at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of Pima Community College East Campus, 8181 E. Irvington Road. Admission is free. The drama will explore what life is like for young people out on the streets. There will be encore presentations on Friday, Dec. 16 and Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m., with the Saturday performance designated as "living theater for the blind" which includes a narration of all action occuring on the stage. The Tucson Masterworks Chamber Singers, under the direction of Barry D. Isbell, will perform their 1994 "Holiday Concert" at 7 p.m. at the San Xavier del Bac Mission, 1950 W. San Xavier Road. Featured is the "Ceremony of Carols" by Benjamin Britten as well as Renaissance Music by Victoria, Vaughn Williams, Berger, Willam and others. SATURDAY, DEC. 17
The Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road, features "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Birma" with Bob Alper: Rabbi/Stand-Up Comedian at 7 p.m. According to the center, Alper is the only practicing clergyman doing stand-up comedy. If Steve Martin and Alan Alda were to have a child, Rabbi Bob Alper would be the result. For ticket information, call the Tucson Jewish Community Center at 299-3000.
