Anderson falls in finals

Arizona Daily Wildcat

Jan Anderson, the Arizona men's tennis team's No. 1 singles player, was defeated Sunday afternoon in the finals of the SkyTel National Clay Court Championships by Miami's Srdan Muskatinovic (6-3, 5-7, 6-1), spoiling Anderson's hopes for the title.

Anderson, who was the No. 3 seed in the tournament, had to battle back after losing the first set, 6-3. But after winning a dramatic second set 7-5, Anderson ran out of gas and was defeated 6-1 in the third and final set.

"We (the team) are all extremely proud of Jan's performance this weekend," Arizona assistant coach Tom Hagedorn said. "He has not only proven himself as one of the best singles players in the country, but he has given a huge boost to the entire Arizona tennis program."

Anderson is currently ranked the No. 6 singles player in the country. His performance at the Clay Court Championships should move him into the top three by the next rankings.

The next stop for Anderson and his rise to the top will be at the All-American Championships in Austin, Texas, Oct. 13-16. Teammates Sten Sumberg and Chris Jenkins will also travel to Austin attempting to qualify for the Championships.
