Cynthia Potter, diving coach at the UA, was honored with her sport's most prestigious award Saturday night at the annual U.S. Aquatic Sports Convention held in Kansas City, Mo.

The Phil Boggs Award honors those who have achieved individual excellence in diving and have given back a part of themselves to insure the sport's success continues. It is given in memory of Boggs, who won a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics and is a former U.S. Diving president.

"I am completely overwhelmed and humbled by the thought that my colleagues would see me as a fitting candidate for this award," Potter said. "I don't know how I can live up to it, it is the ultimate award in diving.

"If I can do half of what Phil has done or be of service in some way that simulates what he did, then my life is working."

Past winners of the award include diving legend Sammy Lee, a gold medalist in 10-meter platform in 1948 and 1952.

In addition to the Boggs award, Potter was presented the Whosam, Inc. Award in August of this year. The award is given to the diving coach of the year, for their commitment to excellence and dedication to the highest physical, mental and spiritual ideals, as voted on by the board of directors of Whosam.

Potter is beginning her 11th season as the diving coach at Arizona.
