Must look beyond campaign ads

Editor:

In C. Kevin Graham's opinion column "In Defense of Kyl" (Sept. 2), it seems that Mr. Graham has missed Douglas H. Allsworth's underlying message ("Voters Beware" Aug. 29). It does not logically follow for Graham to conclude that Allsworth "assumes that he alone knows more than the rest of Arizona's voters" merely because he cautions voters from judging Jon Kyl at face value through a glossy, superficial television ad. As Allsworth suggests [is this:] Voters must look beyond what they are being spoon-fed and delve deeper into a candidate's voting record.

As political hopefuls bombard the public with pseudo-sincere sentiments on television and plaster their faces on sign-posts that pollute empty lots, Allsworth's advice is worth heeding. It does not suffice to make such important decisions based on appearance alone.
