Cornhuskers run all over Bruins

UNLV's Randy Gatewood caught 23 passes for 363 yards and a touchdown in the Rebels' 48-38 loss to Idaho. Gatewood's reception and yardage set NCAA records. The previous records were 22 catches by Brigham Young's Jim Miller against New Mexico in 1973 and 349 yards by Texas-El Paso's Chuck Hughes against North Texas in 1965.

Tommie Frazier ran for one touchdown and threw for two and Lawrence Phillips ran for 178 yards on 19 carries as Nebraska defeated UCLA 49-21.

Redshirt freshman Alex Smith ran for 221 yards and two touchdowns as Indiana beat Kentucky 59-29. Smith broke Indiana's freshman rushing record of 207 yards set by Anthony Thompson in 1986 against Wisconsin.

Oklahoma defensive end Cedric Jones had five sacks and was in on 10 tackles in the Sooners' 17-11 win over Texas Tech.

Arnold Mickens rushed for 233 yards, the fourth highest single-game mark in school history, as Butler defeated Georgetown 31-21.

Montana's Dave Dickenson was 34-of-47 for 424 yards and four touchdowns as the Grizzlies beat Eastern Washington 49-29.

SWINGS

Last year, Boston College and Virginia Tech combined for 1,126 yards as the Eagles won 48-34. The same teams managed only 468 yards as the Hokies avenged last year's loss, 12-7.

Allen Williams rushed for 163 yards, almost 100 more than Maryland had managed in its two previous games, as the Terrapins defeated West Virginia 24-13. Maryland came in averaging only 33.5 yards per game rushing.

Last year, Nebraska had 208 yards rushing against UCLA. This year, the Cornhuskers had 234 yards on the ground by halftime. The Huskers totaled 484 yards rushing in their 49-21 victory over the Bruins.

Notre Dame was held to 60 yards rushing in the first half of its 21-20 win over Michigan State. The Irish piled up 209 yards in the second half when they rallied to win.

STREAKS

Auburn extended the nation's longest winning streak to 14 with a 30-26 win over LSU.

Kansas State defeated Rice 27-18 for the Wildcats' 22nd straight home victory over a non-ranked opponent.

Notre Dame extended its road winning streak to 16 games with a 21-20 victory at Michigan State, breaking the school record of 15 set from 1929-31.

SNAPPED

Kent broke college football's longest losing streak, beating Akron 32-15 for its first victory in 18 games.

Northwestern beat Air Force 14-10, ending a 10-game winless drought.

Missouri broke its 17-game road losing streak by beating Houston 16-0. The Tigers' last road win was oin 1990 at Kansas.

SMU broke a six-game home losing streak with a 34-31 win over New Mexico.

SCORING DEFENSE

Auburn scored three touchdowns on interception returns in the final 13 minutes, the last with 1:55 remaining, and beat LSU 30-26. Auburn's other score came when it recovered an LSU fumble in the end zone for a TD.

Cornerback Chris Martin ran 96 yards with a fumble with 12 minutes to play as Northwestern beat Air Force 14-10.
