UA College of Science names outstanding seniors, faculty

The UA College of Science has named its Outstanding Senior Awards and Outstanding Faculty Awards for the fall semester, to be awarded at the College of Science Winter Commencement Breakfast Dec. 21 at 6:45 a.m.

Seniors were selected by a committee of eight faculty members from the College of Science after being nominated by their department, said Elaine Southard, a College of Science administrative secretary.

Southard said that the student awards are based on overall record, including GPA, honors, activites and faculty recommendations.

The awards were first given in May 1985, Southard said.

This years winners are: Wendy Laura Zolotor, a biochemisry major; Michael Shipman, a computer science major; Martine Anne Belanger, an ecology/evolutionary biology major; Odin Alonso Smith, a geosciences major; Brad Warren Traweek, a mathematics major; Seneca Akasha Messmer, a microbiology major; Chen Li, a molecular/cellular biology major; Aaron Welker Layton, a physics major; and Mary Heather, a speech/hearing sciences major.

Awarded faculty members are: geosciences professor Austin Long, Outstanding Advising Award; associate chemistry professor G. Krishna Vempulapalli, Outstanding Advising Award; chemistry professor M. Bonner Denton, Distinguished Service Award; computer science professor Larry L. Peterson, Distinguished Teaching Award; head of applied mathematices Michael Tabor, Innovation in Teachhing Award; and associate professor of atmospheric sciences Joseph A. Zehnder, Distinguished Teaching Award.
