Main Gate electricity saved when not in use

Editor:

In reply to Michael J. Kelly's recent letter to the Arizona Daily Wildcat ("Try turning off lights to save funds," Nov. 7) regarding the electric lights being on after hours at the Main Gate building, I want to say that we who are involved with this project certainly agree with Michael and his observations.

There is always a concern to save funds, but we are also extremely concerned about conserving the natural resources necessary to power the building. We make every attempt to shut off power to the different areas in the building which are not in use.

The key phrase in this situation is "not in use," and for the past 30 days Ÿ and probably continuing for the next 30 days Ÿ our contractors have been laying carpet at night so as not to interfere with the other contractors' daytime usage, and this past week we have commenced installing the modular office furniture which constitutes about 70 percent of our building space.

I do not mean to imply that these late night contractors are working on all of the five floors in the building at one time, so Michael's diligence will not go unanswered. We will do what we can to make certain that if a particular floor or area is not being worked on at night, it will be lights out. Thanks to Michael for his letter, and for bringing this to our attention.

This building has been a team effort from the beginning, and we have just added Michael's name to our team as an ex officio member.
