A group that represents teachers in Tucson's largest school district called off the shutdown that was scheduled to leave the schools without many of its teachers today.
Tucson Education Association walkout was cancelled after the association reached an agreement with the Tucson Unified School District governing board late Sunday night, according to a release by the association.
The shutdown was scheduled after the board refused to reopen negotiations with the teachers regarding salaries and other issues.
The tentative agreement does not include additional salary increases but does form a joint committee to develop a new schedule to be bargained for the 1996-97 school year. It also restores bilingual teaching assistants to all bilingual classrooms.
The education association represents 5,000 teachers in the district.
