Skunk rescue

FARMINGTON, Maine Ÿ Mike Marcotte risked his nose to help a skunk in distress.
The skunk got its head caught in a jar Saturday morning while rooting through some garbage outside a supermarket. Marcotte was working in the produce department when he noticed the animal.
Co-workers called police, but Marcotte was worried the animal would suffocate. So he summoned up his courage, reached down and tugged on the jar. It would not come loose.
''I gave it another yank and it came off, and I took off,'' said Marcotte, 22.
The ''good-sized'' skunk then ambled off. Marcotte's reward? The skunk left without leaving its telltale spray behind.
'Get Shorty' still tops at the box office

LOS ANGELES Ÿ ''Get Shorty'' stood as the nation's No. 1 box-office draw for the third consecutive weekend, with $10 million in ticket sales, industry sources estimated yesterday.
Final Friday-through-Sunday figures are due out today. The Top 10 according to preliminary estimates:

2. ''Powder,'' $6.5 million.
3. ''Copycat,'' $5.8 million.
4. ''Fair Game,'' $5.1 million.
5. ''Vampire in Brooklyn,'' $4.1 million.
6. ''Home for the Holidays,'' $3.86 million.
7. ''Now and Then,'' $3.8 million.
8. ''Seven,'' $3.75 million.
9. ''Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain,'' $2.5 million.
10. ''Three Wishes,'' $1.7 million.
