GM makes deal, teams up with auto industry in China

DETROIT Ÿ General Motors Corp. has reportedly landed a deal that could give it a bigger foothold in the Chinese automotive market, which is small now but expected to become one of the world's largest.
An announcement may come next week on a billion-dollar-plus GM joint venture with state-owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. to build midsize cars in China, according to yesterday's Wall Street Journal, The Detroit News and USA Today.
Louis R. Hughes, president of the No. 1 automaker's international operations unit, said in Tokyo that the company had not been notified of government approval of its proposal.
''We're just sitting by and waiting,'' GM spokesman Michael Meyerand said yesterday in Detroit.
Prison lockdown sparks riots, fires

LEWIS RUN, Pa. Ÿ Prisoners set fires and destroyed appliances at the federal prison yesterday, a day after officials lifted a lockdown begun when inmates at five other prisons rioted.
The riot lasted seven hours before officials regained control of the medium-security prison.
No employees were hurt, but one of the 1,130 inmates was slightly injured, said Cam Lindsay, spokesman for the prison near the New York-Pennsylvania border.
''The four inmate housing units suffered varying degrees of damage including fire, water and property damage,'' Lindsay said.
