Arizona volleyball runs record to 8-1 in Ohio

The Arizona women's volleyball team swept through yet another tournament this season, beating both Ball State and host Ohio State in the Buckeye Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Saturday's game against the ninth-ranked Buckeyes (3-3) took the Wildcats to the limit.

Arizona fought back from a two-games-to-one deficit to defeat OSU 5-15, 15-5, 7-15, 15-12, 15-11.

Junior Barb Bell was the star for the Wildcats with 23 kills and Carrie Penfield added 17 kills of her own. Heidi Bomberger and Laura Bartsch contributed 13 and 12 digs, respectively.

In UA's 14-16, 15-8,15-13, 15-8 win Friday over the Cardinals (7-3), Bell led the way with 19 kills and outside hitter Penfield added 15 kills. Michelle Fanger contributed nine kills and a career-high 17 digs.

With the wins, the 14th-ranked Wildcats climbed to 8-1 on the year.

The Arizona women's golf team finished sixth at the Rolex Fall Preview Women's Collegiate Golf Tournament in La Quinta, Calif..

The Wildcats shot a 300 in the final round on the par 72, 6,250-yard La Quinta Resort and Club Desert Course.

Their 54-hole total of 914 was 35 shots behind UCLA's winning total of 879.

1995 NCAA champion Arizona State and San Jose State tied for second at 890. Texas finished fourth at 899 followed by Tulsa at 910.

Arizona freshman Maria Baena tied for eighth at 221 after shooting a 75 in the final round. Sophomore Heather Graff recorded a one-under par 71 in the third round, tying her for 11th at 222. Kelli Kuehne of Texas shot a four-under par 68 in the final day of competition to win the individual title.

Arizona's Krissie Register finished tied for 35th at 231, Christina Tolerton was in a tie for 76th at 243 and Brenna Cepelak was tied for 85th with a 247.

Arizona travels to Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 28-30 to compete in the Dick McGuire Invitational.

The Arizona men's golf team finished in fourth place at the Golfweek/PING Fall Preview at the Witch Hollow Course in Cornelius, Ore.

Arizona State captured the team title with a final-round score of 285 to finish with a 54-hole total of 867. UNLV was second with 874 and Clemson was third with an 882.

Arizona finished with an 885.

Sophomore Rory Sabbatini led the way for Arizona with a ninth-place finish, shooting 212. Wildcat junior Gary Matthews finished in a four-way tie for 21st with a 222. UA senior Matt Bergstrom finished one shot behind with a 25th-place finish at 223.

Darren Angel of ASU shot a two-under par 70 in the final round to finish at 209 and win the individual title.

Arizona's Todd Rose finished in a tie for 43rd at 227, while All-American Ted Purdy finished in a tie for 48th at 228.

Arizona will next travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Sept. 22-23.

The Arizona men's club soccer team kept its undefeated record intact, winning two games last weekend and raising its record to 6-0-1.

The Wildcats beat Northern Arizona 2-0 Saturday night in Flagstaff and Emory Riddle 3-0 yesterday in Prescott.

"It was very good to beat NAU," said head coach Ron Fox. "We only lost three games last year, and one of them was to NAU. They have a very good squad."

The team travels to Flagstaff in two weeks to play Utah State and Weber State.
