A former UA employee was sentenced to seven years in prison yesterday, pleading guilty to theft, fraud and money laundering charges, after she was arrested in January of 1993 for stealing $144, 000 from the university.

Bonetta J. Evans, 33, was arrested in January of 1993 for stealing $144,000 from the University of Arizona Dermatology section, in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Evans, a former administative assistant in the sections, was given seven years each for two "fradulent schemes and artiface" felonies, as well as a five-year sentence on a separate theft charge, said Dennis Murphy, Evans' lawyer.

Evans will serve the terms concurrently.

Her job entailed taking money to the Bursar's Office. She is accused of depositing department money totaling about $144,000 into a personal account at First Interstate Bank over the course of about two years.

"She owned up to it completely," Murphy said. "She was remorseful for what she had done, she was in tears as she spoke to the judge."

Evans will be eligible for parole in three and a half years.

Neither Evans nor Dr. Norman Levine, chief of the Dermatology section, could be reached for comment. Read Next Article
