A 17-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of theft under $250, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia after police spotted him stealing a bicycle seat near Coronado Hall.

A UA security guard told police he saw a teenage boy "messing with" bicycles at the racks on the east side of the hall, police said.

Police arrived and saw the boy sitting on a bicycle on the east side of the building, then watched the boy pull the seat off another bicycle and ride away, police said.

The boy headed toward police with the bicycle seat in his hand, police said. When police yelled at him to stop, he jumped off the bicycle, threw the seat and ran towards East Sixth Street and North Euclid Avenue.

An officer, running after the boy, dove and tackled him in the middle of the two streets' intersection, which police had blocked off due to the chase, police said.

Police then handcuffed the boy, who received abrasions on his right hip, right elbow and left knee. The boy refused medical treatment, saying he was alright, police said.

While searching the boy, police found a pipe with burnt residue, a clip with a burnt piece of paper in it, a plastic bag containing a small green plant which the boy said was marijuana, and several wrenches that the boy said he used to take off the seat, police said.

The boy admitted to police that he came to campus with the purpose of stealing bicycle seats, police said.

He was then arrested for theft under $250, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Since police were unable to locate the boy's mother to sign a release, he was booked into Pima County Juvenile Court Center.

A UA student told police she was awakened Wednesday night by an unknown man using a key to open her door at Coronado Hall.

The student said she woke up around 6 p.m. after hearing a key in her door and then saw a man standing in her doorway, police said. After a few seconds, the man closed the door and left.

The student was unable to give a description of the man because she barely caught a glimpse of him, police said.

But the student said she was sure the door was locked and said she is having her doorknob and locks changed, police said.
