RIVERSIDE, Calif. Ä Barry Bonds allegedly threatened the son of a Riverside hair salon owner, prompting the woman to seek a restraining order against the San Francisco Giants star, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

According to the newspaper, Shirley Lewis stated in her petition that on April 7, "Barry Bonds came to my business and made threats on my son's life."

Lewis and her son, Sam Green, work at the salon.

The petition did not say why Bonds would issue such a threat or what his relationship was to Green or Lewis, who both declined to elaborate on the statements in the petition.

Bonds referred comment on the matter to his agent, Dennis Gilbert.

Gilbert's associate, Ken Gurnick, said neither Bonds nor Gilbert would comment until a hearing on the petition, which has been scheduled for May 5 before Judge Victor Miceli in Riverside County Superior Court.

Lewis said Wednesday she will apply for a new date because the Giants are on a nine-day East Coast road trip. The Giants are in Philadelphia tonight.

According to the petition, four witnesses and Bonds' bodyguard were present when Bonds threatened Green. Lewis did not name the witnesses.

Bonds' threats, Lewis stated in the petition, have affected her health and business. She received medical treatment for stress after the incident, and she locks the door to her hair salon during business hours.

Lewis seeks an order barring Bonds from following her and her son and from telephoning or visiting her home or salon. She also asks for attorney's fees and medical costs.

Bonds, whose father Bobby was born in Riverside and became one of the city's most acclaimed high-school athletes, also was born in Riverside.
