The UA men's tennis team broke a nine-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Oregon last Thursday at La Paloma Country Club.
"This win was not that big for us because we expected to beat the Ducks, but it was a good win for us," UA head coach Bill Wright said.
The Wildcats' record now moves to 5-12 overall, but they are still winless in the Pacific 10 Southern Conference. The Ducks have 28 victories this year and the loss was only the fifth for the team all season.
The 20th-ranked intercollegiate singles player, Jan Anderson, did not play due to the academic standards set by himself.
The 46th-ranked Wildcats got off to another bad start as they dropped the doubles point by losing two of the three pro set matches.
Of the 15 dual matches the Wildcats have played this year, they have lost 10 of the doubles points and are at the disadvantage of being down 1-0 before the singles matches even start.
The Wildcats came back, however, and took five of the six singles matches en route to their first victory in over a month.
"Now we need to focus on the next five matches and get to the regionals. That is our goal," Wright said.
Sten Sumberg played the No. 1 position, defeating Dougal Williams in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Chris Jenkins and Ed Schwartz, two of the most consistent Wildcats, played right next to each other at the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Jenkins de-
feated Hans Forsberg 6-1, 7-6 and Schwartz beat Josh Prager 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Schwartz now holds an overall record of 14-8 and is second on the team in wins.
The only loss for the Wildcats came at the No. 4 position. Jack Enfield was downed by John Devorss 7-6, 6-3.
Vuk Tapuskovic has been making the most of his playing time as he defeated Mike Goldstein 7-5, 6-4.
James Rey, who has been in the No. 6 spot all year, won by easily beating John Deakin 6-2, 6-2.
"We have everyone back and we do not need to overemphasize the victory against the Ducks," Wright said.
Although Arizona was down early again, they did not allow themselves to give up and finally broke a long drought of losing dual matches.
The Wildcats will return home for the remainder of the season after a long road trip of over a month. Arizona will next take on nonconference opponent Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo Wednesday at Robson Tennis Center.
