The Arizona baseball team will travel to Los Angeles today for what is probably its most pivotal series of the season.
The Wildcats (17-25-1 overall, 4-14 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) are not fighting for first place in their division Ä rather, when they face UCLA in the first of a three-game Six-Pac series at Jackie Robinson Stadium tonight at 7, they will be fighting to climb out of the cellar.
The Bruins (19-17, 7-11) are the fifth-place team in the division, and the Wildcats would most likely need a sweep to have any chance of catching the Bruins.
"Well, it's possible," UA coach Jerry Kindall said. "We feel that we can match up well with them. We certainly want to escape the cellar and this is our opportunity."
Arizona will send Zach Pringle (2-1, 4.25 ERA) to the mound tomorrow. Pringle will have the task of stopping a hitter that other Wildcat pitchers have not been able to Ä Tim Decinces.
Decinces, son of former California Angels third baseman Doug Decinces, has been something of a Wildcat killer. He has hit four home runs in his last five games against Arizona.
"We haven't found a successful way (to pitch to him)," Kindall said. "We try to throw to what we think is his weakness. But I don't know if we've discerned a weakness yet."
Jim Parque (2-5, 4.16 ERA) will go to the hill for UCLA.

With Tuesday night's 17-hit performance, the Wildcats are now the top hitting team in the Six-Pac. Their .305 team average is just one percentage point better than Arizona State. ...
After facing UCLA this weekend, the Wildcats will close the season with ASU, Southern Cal and Stanford. A sweep of the Bruins would put the Wildcats within striking distance of the 8-9 Sun Devils.
