The Arizona club lacrosse team traveled to California to play Whittier College in the quarterfinals of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League playoffs this weekend.
Unfortunately, the Laxcats did not return home with a glorious victory.
In fact, it was not even close.
In the words of head coach Mickey-Miles Felton they "got murdered."
Whittier won the game 22-4.
The Poets' scoring attack began quickly. They scored 11 goals in the first quarter Ä one of which came 42 seconds into the game.
By halftime, the Poets held the Laxcats scoreless.
Basically, Arizona was unable to play with its intended game plan, which was to maintain control of the ball.
"We did not control the ball and we never gave ourselves the opportunity to win," Felton said. "Had we have controlled the ball, I think that we would have had much more confidence."
Arizona did not even score its first goal until the middle of the third quarter.
The UA experienced a small positive in the final period when it outscored the Poets 3-2, but that was a little too late.
"It was a very sobering experience for us," Felton said. "It was just not our day. What we have to do now is regroup and start planning for the future."
