Last week, Heather Graff of the Arizona women's golf team said she was feeling confident going into the Pacific 10 Conference Championships. That confidence showed up in force in round one of the tournament in Corvallis, Ore.

Graff finished in first place after the opening round, one stroke ahead of Jennifer Biehn of Southern Cal.

Powerhouse Arizona State is leading the tournament by nine strokes over Stanford. Arizona is in fifth place, 14 strokes behind Graff's blistering opening round 68 appeared to be good news for the Wildcats. Unfortunately for the UA, however, the rest of the team did not fare as well.

Ulrika Johannson was the second-best finisher for the Wildcats, finishing tied for 13th.

A disappointing first round for Brenna Cepelak hurt the Wildcats' chances for having a top-three performance. Cepelak finished 10 strokes behind Graff, and is tied for 25th.

Whether the Wildcats will make a run at ASU and the Cardinal of Stanford depends largely on Cepelak. If she can return to the form that brought her two straight top-10 finishes earlier this spring, then Arizona may be among the leaders by the tournament's end.

The final round for the championship is today.
