First Day of Classes
The Tubac Center of the Arts is sponsoring a Watermedia Workshop with UA professor of art, Rob Erdle at the Doyle/Johnson Studio, 2 Placita de Anza, Tubac, today from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Using landscape sketches or photographs, the workshop will explore inventive techniques in any water-based media. The University of Arizona Art Department presents "Evolution and Legacy: Remembering Past Faculty" at the Joseph Gross Gallery running through Feb. 5. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Gallery. The exhibition will honor both the artists and teachers who have helped to shape the university's art program. The Gallery is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 12-4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information call the UA Art Department at 621-1251.

Performance art is back at Cafe Magritte's Cabaret Magritte! These semi-regular events, which feature spoken word, music and artistic performance, have created quite a sensation while becoming a much appreciated addition to the downtown art scene. Get there early, the show begins at 10 p.m. and are always well attended. These often mad-capped happening takes place in Cafe Magritte's Bowler Room at 254 E. Congress St. Call 884-8004 for details.
The Opera Guild of Southern Arizona is holding its Annual Benefit Gala Banquet at 6 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel. Performances will feature Claude Debusy's "L'Enfant Prodigue," a cantata for three voices and piano. Performing will be pianist Elizabeth Chadwick, soprano Lydia Easley, tenor Scott Tuomi, and baritone David Sannerud. Proceeds from the Gala will benefit the Guild's Assistance Fund which provides scholarships and other financial aid to voice students. For ticket information, call the Opera Guild at 885-1195.
The Dinnerware Artists' Cooperative Gallery continues to present it's Mid-Day Music Lunch-Hour Concert Series with the performance of Mary Redhouse and Larry Hauer from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Dinnerware Gallery, 135 E. Congress Street. Music will be of a jazz, blues, and Native American flavor and the audience is invited to bring their lunch to the concert. The musical sound of the 40s will fill Centennial Hall when the UA Cultural Office presents "Battle of the Big Bands" at 2 p.m. The concert will feature music from swing era greats including Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Harry Hames, and Glenn Miller. The Pima Community College West Campus Art Gallery at 2202 West Anklam Road, presents "Elementary School Art: a children's art exhibition" through February 21. Work presented in the exhibition was submitted by elementary school arts teachers in the Tucson Area. The Harlem Globetrotters will be ushering in a new era of entertainment as they bring their 1995 "Salute The Family" world tour to the Tucson Convention Center at 7:30 p.m.. Those Globetrotters have entertained more than 100 million fans in 113 countries around the world for the last six decades, and their Tucson event will also include a special post-game autograph signing ceremony. The UA Office of Cultural Affairs is bringing the Broadway Musical "Jelly's Last Jam" to Centennial Hall at 8 p.m. There will be another performance on Thursday, Jan.19 also at 8 p.m. This acclaimed musical explores the life of jazz great Jelly Roll Morton, as well as the birth of jazz. Unlike many musicals, this performance has a darker side as it explored its title character's fears, pain, and inner turmoil surrounding his African American heritage.
