Prior to the implementation of the Hollywood Production Code in 1934 many animated shorts exhibited scandalous material. The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress, will be showing Pre-Code Cartoons at 8 p.m. tonight; Friday, March 3 at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.; Saturday, March 4 at 8 p.m., 9:45 p.m., and 11:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. Screenings include Betty Boop in "Is My Palm Red?" and Flip the Frog in "Soda Squirt." The ironic theatrics continue at the Mat Bevel Institute, 211 Fremont Ave., with Let's Change the Subject with shows today, Friday and Saturday, starting at 8 p.m. There will be additional performances March 9th through 11th. Shows feature the poetry, performance, and sculptures of artist Ned Schaper, a.k.a. Mat Bevel, with original recorded music by the Mat Bevel orchestra. For more information, call 622-0192.

FRIDAY, MARCH 3

New Movie Releases:

"Man of the House." Chevy Chase and Johnathon Taylor Thomas co-star in this new comedy about a power struggle between a boy and his soon-to-be step-dad.

"Outbreak." A deadly virus, more potent than the bubonic plague and more contagious than the common cold, has migrated from the depths of the African Rainforest and found its way to the small community of Cedar Creek, California in this thriller that stars Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, and Rene Russo.

"The Professional," starring Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, and Natalie Portman, will be showing at Gallagher Theater at 7:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. and will continue through Sunday, March 5. The film tells the story of a professional killer who, in the process of protecting an orphan, teaches her the tricks of his trade. For more information, call Gallagher Theater at 621-2102.

Edgar Winter, famous guitarist in the '70s, will be performing at the Rock, 136 N. Park Ave. Winter, who just released his first solo album in more than a decade, Not a Kid Anymore, will be performing hits from his platinum album They Only Come Out at Night, as well as more recent songs. Freaks and social deviants unite! "Freaks," a Lollapalooza-style festival at the DPC, features eight local bands, including Los Federales, Social Outcast, Teeth, Helldriver, F.U.C.T., Spill Blanket, Beats the Hell Out of Me, and Scar Strangled Banger, and a variety of events. Contests at the fair include best piercing, best mohawk, best tattoos and multi-colored spitting contests. Proceeds benefit the Brewster Shelter. Josh White, Jr. will be giving a performance of his famous, self-titled "save the world" brand of blues songs that have made him famous along the East Coast. SATURDAY, MARCH 4

The Coctails, Starcrunch and Wise Folk Malcontent, will be performing at the Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave. Although the Cocktails were once the forerunners of the Cocktail Nation, band members they have changed their music style to a more "chirpy, happy upbeat mix of pop, jazz, folk, simple rock and roll and ballads." Carrot Top, a crazy comedian famous for his flaming red hair, is coming to Tucson for a single performance tonight at 8 p.m. in Centennial Hall. Come see Carrot Top use ordinary, household items in new ways not imagined before. Tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Hall box office or by calling 621-3341.

Downtown Saturday Night returns to the Arts District this weekend with music, entertainment, and food! Galleries, shops and restaurants all stay open late as the entire Downtown area transforms into a huge block party. Downtown Saturday Nights in March will highlight children's art as part of a month-long "Step into the Arts" festival celebrating National Children's Art Education Month. Featured entertainers will be Dino Drummers and Double Dutch Kids from 7-10 p.m. at the Ronstadt Transit Center, 6th Ave. and Congress. The Phantom Gallery is changing Tucson's downtown scenery by displaying artists' work in vacant buildings. Artist Katie Cooper has a display in the vacant Amity Building, 47 E. Pennington until the end of March and new displays are always appearing.

MONDAY, MARCH 6

Samiam, yet another entry in the onslaught of post-punk bands, will be performing an "all-ages" show at the Downtown Performance Center, 530-B N. Stone Ave, along with Goops and Chokebore. Samiam will perform its lively melodicore punk with an annoying attitude. For tickets and additional information, call the Downtown Performance Center at 628-1650.

TUESDAY, MARCH 7

The Radiators will be performing their New Orleans blues/rock at the Rock, 136 N. Park Ave., to satisfy everyone's boogie bone. The Rads have been performing their seminal funk called "fish head music" since the '70s and according to the band "it's a cross between The Grateful Dead and Dr. John." WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8

East Coast, singer-songwriter Dar Williams will be making her first performance in Tucson at the Southwest Center for Music, 2175 N. Sixth Ave. Williams' self-produced CD, {The Honesty Room} is a collection of thoughtful tunes that belie Williams' 27 years.
