THURSDAY, MARCH 30

"Modern Design in the Desert: The Architecture of Nicholas Sakellar (1918-1993)" will be presented at the College of Architecture's T.M. Sundt Design Gallery until April 6. Designs for El Con Mall, Catalina High School, the Tucson House, and the Wilmot Public Library will be exhibited as well as construction drawings, finished renderings and conceptual design sketches from Sakellar's 40 years of practice. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Author Annie Proulx capped off an extraordinary 1994 when she won the Pulitzer prize for her novel, The Shipping News. Come hear Proulx read from her work tonight at 8 p.m. in the Tucson Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave. The event is presented by the UA Poetry Center, the Arizona Humanities Council, and the Tucson Public Library. For more information, call the Poetry Center at 321-7760.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company is turning 40 years old this year and they're coming to Centennial Hall tonight at 8 p.m. to celebrate! This world renowned company has performed in more than 300 American cities and has made more than 40 overseas tours. New Movies This Weekend:

"Tommy Boy" - Saturday Night Lives' king-size "ball of lightning" Chris Farley stars as a college graduate with a D+ average, who attempts to salvage the family auto parts business from ruin in this comedy from Paramount Pictures. Rob Lowe and David Spade also star.

"Heavenly Creatures" - This psychological thriller directed by Peter Jackson is based on a historical incident involving two girl's infatuation with each other and their contemplation of murder.

Photographer Ruth Thorne-Thompson, well known for her small-scale, toned, pinhole images of fabricated worlds, will be showing her work in an exhibition entitled "Within this Garden" appearing at the UA Center for Creative Photography through May 28. The exhibit was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College in Chicago. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. For more information call the Center at 621-7968.

SATURDAY, APRIL 1

April Fools' Day

Anyone disappointed with the inaccessibility of the U of A's campus radio station, can put their money where there mouth is tonight at the annual KAMP Fest. Local blues deconstructionists Doo Rag will play at the Buena Vista Theatre along with hippie-rap fiends Phunk Junkeez and skasters No Doubt. Tickets are $12 for students (available in Student Union Room. 101) or $14 for non-students (get 'em at Zia).

SUNDAY, APRIL 2

The UA Museum of Art proudly presents the 1995 Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition starting this weekend. This year's event, which features the product of many sleepless nights of work on the part of thirteen MFA students will be on display until April 23. The exhibition has a reputation of being eclectic and energetic, with artists exhibiting everything from photographs and illustrated books to room-sized installations. Museum hours are Monday though Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 621-7567.

TUESDAY, APRIL 4

Contemporary artwork by Australian photographer Leah King-Smith is on display at the Center for Creative Photography until May 28. King-Smith re-photographs 19th century photos of Australian aboriginal people and combines them with her own images of the Australian landscape. Gallery hours are Monday though Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5

Graduate students from the UA Creative Writing Program will read their poetry in the Modern Languages Auditorium at 8 p.m. This year's MFA candidates are Laura Bean, Cori Brackett, Loren Goodman, Bruce McKenzie and Steve Runkle. For more information, call 321-7760

Enter the game of love and lies as Arizona Repertory Theater presents False Admissions, a play by Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux. The play is a romantic comedy that deals with the absurdity of class divisions in 18th century France, when the culture of manners was at its zenith. The production will begin at 8 p.m., with shows until April 8, and April 11-15 at 8 p.m. and matinee performances at 2 p.m. on April 9, and 15-16.
