A routine traffic stop Wednesday afternoon at North Park Avenue and East Fourth Street led to the arrest of two people on charges of unlawful possession of marijuana.

Ty Lainhart, 23, of the 1400 block of East Mabel, and Jennifer Murray, 22, of the 1000 block of East Lester, were arrested when police noticed a metal marijuana pipe and a small bag of marijuana in their car.

Police initially stopped the vehicle because they saw Lainhart, the driver, make an illegal left turn onto East Sixth Street. Officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Lainhart and moved his vehicle to a safe place so they could proceed with a DUI investigation.

The officer moving the car noticed the pipe and bag of marijuana sitting in plain view.

Lainhart and Murray were cited and driven home because they had been drinking alcohol. The officer noted that while the suspects were being driven home, Lainhart kept repeating that he was not a criminal because smoking marijuana is not a crime.
