Zidek honored by GTE

NEW YORK Ä George Zidek, the UCLA basketball team's starting center from the Czech Republic, was among those selected to the GTE Academic All-America team yesterday.

An economics major, he has a 3.77 grade-point average.

Zidek is averaging 12 points and six rebounds a game for the No. 1 Bruins.

Penn State's John Amae-chi, a graduate student from Manchester, England, was designated the team member of the year as the individual who best represents the qualities of an Academic All-America team member. He is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds a game while maintaining a 3.24 GPA as a pyschology major.

Also selected to the University Division team were Fred Hoiberg, averaging 21 points a game for Iowa State, with a 3.23 GPA as a finance major; Scott Highmark of Saint Louis, averaging 14 points a game with a 3.60 GPA as a business-marketing major; and Todd Fuller, a junior at North Carolina State averaging 16 points a game with a 3.96 in applied mathematics.
