After coming away with four titles at the prestigious Drake Relays last weekend, the Arizona track and field squad returns to host the Arizona Elite Classic this Saturday.

UA will be joined by teams from Long Beach State, New Mexico, Northern Arizona and the University of Texas-El Paso at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. Also competing will be world-class athletes from around the country who are trying to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June in Atlanta.

The competition marks the last chance for those UA athletes who have not set qualifying marks for the Pacific 10 Conference Championships, May 18-19 in Los Angeles.

"We are looking to keep improving and continue to compete at a very high level as we get ready for the Pac-10 championships," UA head coach Dave Murray said.

Saturday's meet begins with the men's hammer and women's discus throw at 4 p.m. and concludes with the women's 5,000-meter run set to begin at 9:45 p.m.

For the third-straight week, an Arizona athlete was named Pac-10 athlete of the week. Freshman Amy Skieresz received the honor after she ran the second-fastest 5,000 meters in Pac-10 history with an NCAA and Olympic Trials qualifying time of 15 minutes, 45.59 seconds at the Mt. San Antonio Relays in Walnut, Calif., on April 20.

The other Wildcats named athlete of the week are freshman Tapio Kolunsarka, with his NCAA automatic qualifying toss of 222-3 in the hammer for the week beginning April 15, and junior Chima Ugwu, who won the shot put at the Sun Angel Classic with a NCAA automatic mark of 64-4 1/2 for the week of April 8.

Last week at the Drake Relays, UA sophomore Dominic Johnson headlined the meet for the Wildcats as he won the pole vault with a school-record breaking jump of 18 feet, 1 1/2 inches. The attempt was nine inches higher than his former personal best. He automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Ore., May 29-June 1, and the Olympic Trials with his effort.

The Pac-10 Heptathlon and Decathlon Championships will be held May 11-12 in Los Angeles. Johnson, along with teammate David Norman, a senior, will represent Arizona in the decathlon, and DeeDee Buzzi will compete in the heptathlon.
