UA students ought to become more involved with KAMP student radio

Editor:

I would like to respond to a letter that was published this past Tuesday regarding the musical direction of KAMP Student Radio. I feel that Melissa is not alone in her views that KAMP has a limited view on the types of music that is available to listeners. This has been one of our most notorious misconceptions and is largely due to the fact that we have limited funding for the promotion of the station and its eclectic shows.

KAMP is completely student run, from the board members to the assistant DJs. KAMP's main goal is to give the student body an effective voice on campus and in Tucson's community. As program director of the station, I can honestly say that we have the most eclectic programming on Tucson's airwaves.

The music that is heard on KAMP is exactly what the students who have volunteered want to play. KAMP has a great variety of music being broadcast that included metal, reggae, blues, rhythm and blues, ska, punk, hip-hop, electronic, and local music. We even have an hour of a cappella music on Tuesday mornings.

Aside from the music, we broadcast news, sports (volleyball and women's softball), and a call-in talk show provided by the Oasis Center in efforts to spread awareness of rape and alcohol problems on campus.

I know KAMP has something for everybody on this campus and in our community. If Melissa or anyone else has an idea for programming, I suggest they drop by the station or attend one of our weekly meetings (5 p.m., Old Chemistry, Room 111).

Our problem is not in the music, but in the lack of awareness that permeates our community. We are dedicated to giving our fellow students a voice. This is our radio station. Now we simply need to be heard.
