Columnist's logic on an individual's sexual choices is 'faulty'

Editor:

After reading Kristen Roberts' latest editorial, "Abstinence protects the body and emotions best" on Thursday, I had to laugh. While I respect her personal decision of abstinence and I agree that it is definitely the safest option, her logic is faulty at best. I ask Roberts, how do you register for classes each semester without your dialing finger becoming crippled by the idea of, gasp, the wrong course selection? How do you make any decision in your life without being incapacitated by the thought of only the negative effects of your choice? By no means am I trying to understate the consequences of unprotected sex. Instead, I suggest that we encourage programs such as Condom Week to help students make EDUCATED decisions about these complex issues. When I volunteered for Planned Parenthood, I was amazed at their compassionate attitudes and, in contrast to Roberts' statements, their dedication to preserving the privacy of patients. Unlike Roberts' ostrich-like assertion that every individual should share her value system, Planned Parenthood and other organizations like it are committed to helping patients, in a non-judgmental manner, to deal with the REALITIES of their personal choices.
