Undergraduate Senate approves nominations for ASUA Supreme Court

The Undergraduate Senate unanimously approved the student body president's four nominations for the ASUA Supreme Court last night.

Law students Adam Alper, Lupe Martinez and Joseph Vigil were elected as the new Supreme Court justices for the as long as they attend the UA College of Law.

Romy Schelcht was named as an alternate until January, when the current Chief Justice, January Contreras, will be graduating and leaving a space open on the court.

The Supreme Court interprets the Associated Students' constitution and decides disputes related to the constitution. It is composed of five UA law students, with the student body president appointing one member chief justice.

"Any time there is a problem with the legislative or executive branch, it goes to the judicial branch. It also handles any elections violations," Undergraduate Senate Chairman Gilbert Davidson said.

In other business, the Senate approved the nomination of a new director for the Women's Resource Center.

Michelle McCowan, a finance senior and engineering sophomore, was nominated by Mindy McCollum, vice president for programs and services.

"I'm trying to bring some energy back into the center and bring it out into UA and Tucson," McCowan told the Senate before the vote.

McCowan has been involved in the center for the past year and a half. She is also a member of the Society of Women Engineers.

McCowan was elected by the center and her nomination was forwarded to McCollum. She has been fulfilling the role of director since Nov. 5, when the last director stepped down for personal reasons.
