Winter session enrollment was highest ever this year

A record-breaking number of students earned college credits over the winter break.

Winter session enrollment rose to 512 students, an increase of 112 students over last year, said Anne Fillmore, coordinator of Summer and Winter sessions.

Fillmore said the increase of enrollment is due to intensive advertising with parents and leaving class enrollment open until the physical classroom was full.

Winter session classes have been offered at the University of Arizona for the last 10 years. This year, the UA offered 35 classes, compared to 25 classes offered last year.

Nina Bjornsson, who taught film and literature during the break, said, "Winter session is really a service to the students."

Jennifer Abril, communication senior, said she took a winter session class because it would help her graduate on time.

"I thought a winter session class would be easier, but it was not," Abril said.

Bjornsson said winter session classes meet the same number of hours it would during the regular semester. "It's an awful lot of work condensed into a small amount of time," she said.

Winter session meets 14 days during the winter break for 2 1/2 hours a day.
