Rugby team dominates British

The British came, the British saw and the British received a huge defeat at the hands of the Arizona Rugby club.

Buckinghamshire College, a touring team from High Wycombe, England, was defeated 32-14 by UA (11-4) at Estevan Park Friday.

"We took advantage of the international game to play some of our coaches and other personnel," Arizona head coach Dave Sitton said.

With Chris Kron, Paul Gause, Dan Duncan and Alan Lakomskis all sitting out, UA utilized Phil Moody, Jeremy Revell and Drake Hirayama, who are all coaches, to counter the older players on the British side.

"Eligibility at that level is much different even though they are still a college," Sitton said.

Arizona, who has increased its record against international competition this season to 2-1, got two try's from Matt Gerrow, and one from Dan Shields, Kay Ogiyama and Moody.

"I didn't know any more than anyone else (about Buckinghamshire) because (their) score of 40-0 against Nevada didn't give us any indication," Sitton said. "We just showed some skills and dominated from start to finish."

UA came out to have fun on the field and display its talent and pride at the expense of the British, who hold the sport of rugby in high regard.

"Buckinghamshire played as hard as they could but we've got some guys over the last three or four years who have turned this program into an entity of pride," Sitton said.

It was a relaxing and fun weekend for UA, but now it is back to business for the Wildcats as they prepare for their upcoming Memorial Invitational, which will take place Saturday and Sunday at Estevan Park.
