Arsonist strikes in university area

An arsonist burglarized a university-area rental home Friday, then set the structure ablaze, causing about $30,000 in damage, authorities said.

No one was injured.

A neighbor called the Tucson Fire Department about 6:30 p.m. and reported seeing large flames coming from the front of the building at 1038 N. Tyndall Ave., said Capt. Brian Delfs, a fire department spokesman.

Firefighters arrived in less than three minutes. They had the fire under control about 10 minutes later, but not before it caused $20,000 damage to the house and almost $10,000 to the contents, Delfs said.

Investigators determined an arsonist started the fire after burglarizing the house, Delfs said. The case has been turned over to Tucson Police Department detectives, he said.

Two women shared the house, but they are not University of Arizona students, said a representative of the Marshall Foundation, which owns the building.

The foundation was trying to locate alternate housing for the tenants earlier this week, said the representative.
