From staff reports

Arizona senior left-hander Rob Shabansky will undergo "Tommy John" surgery on the medial collateral ligament in his left elbow today.

Shabansky incurred the injury in the Wildcats' season opener against St. Mary's Jan. 22. Because he only appeared in that one game, Shabansky will be allowed to take a medical redshirt for 1999. He is expected to be out a total of 10 months, meaning he will miss this entire season and fall practice.

Shabansky was 5-1 with a 3.35 ERA last year on the mound before an unrelated elbow injury forced him into a designated hitter-only role for the remainder of the season. He hit .439 with three home runs and 20 RBI. For his career, Shabansky is 15-8 with a 4.73 ERA with a .407 batting average. The Las Vegas, Nev., native was drafted by the Boston Red Sox this past summer but chose not to sign.
