Blood Drive

Give the ultimate gift to someone who needs it: donate blood. The Red Cross is holding a blood drive on the UA mall today from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Look for the mobile building labeled with the Red Cross logo in front of Gallagher Theatre. Don't worry about pain, it doesn't hurt as much as you think it does, and it's for a good cause. Call Joyce Meder at 621-7428 with any additional questions.

Gardening Demo

Learn all that you possibly can about gardening in the desert when the Pima County Master Gardeners hold an hour-long demonstration. Their afternoon topic - "How Desert Plants Survive" - will start at 1 at the Wilmot branch library on 530 N. Wilmot Road. Everyone is invited. The Extension Garden Center will field all extra questions at 621-5161.

Concert

Looking for a swinging band to see tonight? Take advantage of Smashmouth's appearance at the Rialto Theatre on 318 E. Congress St.. Smashmouth mixes a sixties feel with today's rock to provide a thrilling show. Opening band Hot Sause Johnson starts at 8 p.m. Tickets run around $13 plus service charges. Workshop

Interested in Independent film? The UA College of Fine Arts presents Nisha Ganatra, who will present her two newest projects, "Junky Punky Girlz," and "Chutney Popcorn." Gantra will also discuss conflicts that arise from her being an Indian filmmaker and the status of "queer film". The whole process begins at 7:30 p.m. in the AME building room 202. Simulation

The UA Udall center is holding a conflict resolution simulation exercise. It all starts at 11:30 a.m. in the UA Water Resource Center at 350 N. Campbell Ave. The program is designed to discovered conflicts and resolutions to those conflicts that arise from the use of rangelands throughout the country. Spots are limited so call the Udall Center at 621-7189 for reservations.

Poetry Reading

The UA Poetry Center presents renowned poet Beth Ann Fennelly at Antigone Books at 411 N. Fourth Ave. Friday at 7 p.m. Fennelly, who has work featured in publications including The Best American Poetry 1996 and "The Bloomsbury Review," was named the winner of the poetry center's Summer Residency Program. Concert

The Reverend Horton Heat with Mike Ness, Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics, Custom Made Scare, and Thunderosa at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress. Museum

The scariest creatures come out at night. Arizona's Sonora Desert Museum allows visitors to check out all of Tucson's nightlife. The segment, called "Creatures of the Night", will allow viewers to observe nocturnal creatures like snakes and scorpions.

Tickets are free for the under 6 crowd, $1.75 for those 6-13 and $8.95 for everyone else. Call 740-0126 or 800-638-4235 for ticket info. The museum is located at 2021 N. Kinney Road.

Fireworks

City of Tucson's Fire in the Sky Spectacular Fireworks Display, 9 p.m. at "A" Mountain.

Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club, 4001 N. Country Club Road. Festivities kick off at 4 p.m. and the fireworks begin just after dark. Call 795-5007 ext. 338

Avra Valley Airport in Marana. The gates open at 4:30 p.m. and fireworks start at 9 p.m.

Tucson Raceway Park, 12500 S. Houghton Road. Fireworks being around 8:30 p.m. during an intermission of the NASCAR race. General Admission is $10. Kids under 11 are free. Call 762-9200 for tickets.

Hi Corbett Field. Fireworks begin after the USA/ Korea baseball game. All tickets are $6. Call 327-9700

School's out

Go ahead and hit that snooze alarm, the university is closed for Independence Day.

Theater

Take advantage of the Gaslight Theatre's presentation to benefit PHASE, a low-income housing program. The show includes a 50's style Hot Rod play and all proceeds will go to PHASE. Tickets run at $14. For seating availability, call Patricia at 626-4129.

Lecture

Sharpen those astronomical skills by attending Evonne Grace Marietta's "Type Ia Supernova Explosions in Binary Systems: The Impact on the Secondary Star and its Consequences."
