University police arrested a man on suspicion of drunken driving Tuesday after finding him unconscious in the driver's seat of his car at the intersection of East Second Street and North Olive Drive.
An officer arrived at 5:37 a.m. and spotted the late-model Isuzu station wagon parked on Second Street with the engine running and the radio playing "loudly," police reports stated.
The driver, James E. Goeway, 28, of the 3600 block of East Fairmont Street, was unconscious and attempts to wake him were unsuccessful, reports stated.
Goeway did not respond when an officer shook him, so police called for medical assistance, then checked Goeway's breathing and pulse.
The officer noticed a large cigarette ash on Goeway's shirt and various empty beer bottles scattered inside the car, reports stated.
After several attempts to wake him, Goeway regained alertness about three minutes later and slipped his foot off the car's clutch pedal, causing it to lurch forward. The officer then climbed over Goeway to apply the vehicle's parking brake.
Goeway, who swayed back and forth as he spoke, told medical technicians in a slurred voice that he drank beer and was taking medication for depression, reports stated.
When asked to perform field sobriety tests, Goeway told police he didn't want to do any until he contacted his attorney, and he blamed his condition on medications he was taking, reports stated.
Police took Goeway to university police headquarters where his blood alcohol level was .102 percent, reports stated.
Goeway was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and taken to the Pima County Jail.
A student told university police Tuesday that she fears for her safety because her ex-boyfriend "verbally abused" her during a telephone conversation.
The student told police her 18-year-old ex-boyfriend contacted her Aug. 18 and asked her to return a leather jacket that he let her borrow during their five-month relationship. The student told police he was civil toward her during that conversation.
He later came to Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St., and asked the woman's roommate for his jacket, but it wasn't there, so he left a message for his ex-girlfriend to call him at his room at Babcock Inn, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd.
When the student called her ex-boyfriend to have him get his jacket at her mother's house, he reportedly called the student a "bitch" and a "fucking liar."
Police later spoke to the man and told him his behavior could lead to harassment charges and that the woman had filed a complaint against him, reports stated.
The man told police he would stay away from the student and would not try to contact her.
A 46-year-old student called university police Tuesday to report $20 and some tea bags stolen from her office at the Harshbarger/Mines building, 1235 E. North Campus Drive.
The student told police she remembered leaving her purse inside her locked third-floor office on at least one occasion to go to a computer room. She said she believes her tea and a $20 bill were taken from her office between 8:30 a.m. Monday and 11:20 a.m. Tuesday.
A student called university police early Monday after hearing voices coming from the bushes outside his first-floor room at Kaibab-Huachuca Residence Hall, 922 E. Fourth St.
Officers arrived at 12:25 a.m. and spoke to the student after finding no one suspicious in the area, police reports stated.
The student told police he looked outside earlier and heard two people walking through the bushes in front of his window and saw a flashlight beam move around.
He added that he heard a man's voice but could not see anyone's face in the dark.
Someone sent university police a pornographic picture that may have been found on East First Street near North Warren Avenue.
Police received a letter addressed to university police headquarters Tuesday stating, "I found this today at First Street and Warren," police reports stated.
Enclosed was a sexually explicit photo. The letter, which was unsigned, was placed along with the photograph in an evidence file.
