A university police officer followed two men early Monday morning after he saw them lingering around a campus parking lot.

The officer was on patrol at 1:09 a.m. when he saw the two men in the southwest corner of the East Ninth Street and North Fremont Avenue parking lot, police reports stated.

As police approached the men, one ran and the other rode away on bicycle toward the University Vista Apartments, 951 E. 10th St.

According to reports, the officer saw a black bike chained to a pole in the southwest corner of the lot on Sunday, similar to the one the man used to flee from the officer.

When the officer arrived at University Vista Apartments, he saw a black bike lying on the ground and decided to leave it there because he didn't know who owned it, reports stated.

Upon returning to the lot, the officer saw a parking sign on the ground by the pole where the bike had been locked up. Another sign was damaged and one was missing.

Police arrested a Lubbock, Texas, man on suspicion of giving false information to police late Monday morning after a resident assistant called to report solicitation in the dorm.

According to reports, the resident assistant told police he saw a man, later identified to be Craig R. Scott, 18, selling magazines on the fourth floor of Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall, 1000 N. Park Ave.

Police asked Scott what he was doing in the dorm and he told them he was selling magazines for a company called TNT Sales.

Scott gave police the name "David Deshawn Thomas," but the RA told officers the man had originally identified himself as Craig. A fourth floor resident also told police the man had said his name was Craig, reports stated.

Police asked Scott if he was a student and he said yes, but police were unable to find any evidence of Scott's enrollment.

Officers cited Scott, who then told police the first name he had provided was his brother's, reports stated.

As police were writing up Scott's citation, his supervisor returned and Scott informed him of what was going on.

Officers informed Scott's supervisor of trespassing and solicitation laws and released him, reports stated.

The officer stopped the men in an area between the library and the Bear Down Gym, 1428 E. University Blvd., and identified one of the men as a university student, reports stated.

Both men said they had no identification but provided police with their names and date of birth.
