University police arrested a man Saturday night on suspicion of urinating in public after a desk attendant from Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St., noticed suspicious activity.

An officer went to the dorm at 10:33 p.m. and spoke with Ronnie James Birchen, 19, of St. Paul, Minn. Birchen said to police, "I pissed over there by the bushes," police reports stated.

Police, who found a wet spot on a wall by the bushes, cited Birchen and released him.

An officer was on patrol Friday night when a man approached him and asked to be taken to jail, police reports stated.

Police were approached by a man driving a 1995 brown Ford F150 at the corner of North Park Avenue and East Second Street at 9:37 p.m.

According to reports, the man in the truck spoke incoherently and said he had stolen something and that he was a "bad boy." He then asked the officer to take him to jail.

The officer asked the man if he was mentally ill, and the man said he had schizophrenia and was on medication, reports stated.

According to reports, the officer contacted his parents, who said the man was staying with them. The parents said if anyone found the man that he was to be taken to St. Mary's Hospital by ambulance.

The man went to the hospital voluntarily and was admitted.

A resident assistant called police early Saturday morning after she smelled what she believed to be marijuana.

An officer went to Babcock Inn Residence Hall, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd., at 12:28 a.m. and met with the RA.

She escorted police to the room from which she believed to have smelled the marijuana, and the officer also smelled a strong odor, police reports stated.

The officer knocked on the door and a person inside peeked through the blinds but didn't respond, reports stated.

Police knocked on the door two more times but no one answered. The officer then requested a key to the room and went inside at 12:34 a.m., reports stated.

The officer saw a man and woman lying on a bed in the room. He asked the two students who lived in the room and the woman told him she did and her roommate was in the bathroom. The man was the boyfriend of the resident in the bathroom, reports stated.

The woman on the bed said she had no marijuana and that she hadn't smoked any. Police inspected her and she showed no evidence of being impaired, reports stated.

The student in the bathroom said she had smoked one "joint" with her boyfriend and then showed officers the leftover marijuana in the ashtray, reports stated.

The resident's boyfriend admitted to smoking and then took the rest of his marijuana, which he had hid between the bed and the wall, and gave it to police, reports stated.

The officer referred the resident and her boyfriend to the Dean of Students Diversion Program.

Police arrested a Tucson man Friday afternoon on suspicion of disorderly conduct after he refused to cooperate with a bus driver, police reports stated.

An officer got on the bus, parked at the corner of East University Boulevard and North Cherry Avenue, and spoke with the SunTran driver at 4:56 p.m. The driver pointed to Kristan N. Bettencourt, 38, of the 2100 block of East Water Street, who was sitting in a chair with his legs stretched out across the seats in front of him, police reports stated.

The officer, who told Bettencourt to get off the bus, questioned him. Bettencourt told police he had just had surgery on his knees and was instructed by his doctor to keep his legs straight while seated, reports stated.

He told police the bus driver had asked him to remove his legs from the seats so a patron in a wheelchair could board the bus. Bettencourt said he refused to do so, reports stated.

Police noted Bettencourt appeared intoxicated.

The bus driver told police she had asked Bettencourt to remove his legs several times. He cursed at her and refused to listen to her, reports stated.

Police cited him for disorderly conduct and Bettencourt said, "This is a fucking joke," and "That driver was a fucking bitch," reports stated.

Bettencourt was cited and released. Police also noted the stitches on Bettencourt's knees.
