UMC losing money in treating international patients

UMC is projected to lose about $6 to 8 million this fiscal year because of health care services it provides for international patients who don't pay hospital bills.
Most of University Medical Center's international patients tend to be from Mexico because of Arizona's proximity to the border, said Barbara Felix, the International Patient Services coordinator.
However, Felix said UMC cares for patients from all over the world, including countries such as Germany, France and Canada.

Women swimmers seek last goal

Fresh off a Pacific 10 Conference Championship, the No. 2 Arizona women's swimming and diving team travels to Indianapolis next week seeking its first-ever national title.
"To win the NCAA's we are going to have to do what we have been doing, and more," freshman Beth Botsford said. "This is what it comes down to and we have to put it all together at once and just swim."

Editorial: Controversial play needs open communication

In the past week, a controversy has brewed over the production of a play written by a UA Theater Arts graduate student. During last week's auditions for "Timepiece," actors were told that their parts might include onstage nudity. It turned out that they also might include sex scenes with a blow-up doll. While the production should be protected as art, the lack of full disclosure is inexcusable.

Native American film premieres in Tucson

In a cinematic first, a film written, directed, produced and performed solely by Native American women will premiere tomorrow night in Tucson.
"Naturally Native," playing at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd., follows the lives of three Native American sisters as they struggle to define their identities and start their own cosmetic business.
